Driftless Area

The Driftless Area

The Driftless AreaThe Driftless Area encompasses a large portion of southwestern Wisconsin, including parts of Crawford, Vernon, Richland, and La Crosse counties. It also includes parts of Allamakee, Clayton, Winneshiek, and Fayette counties in Iowa and parts of Winona, Houston, Fillmore, and Olmsted counties in Minnesota.

Unlike much of the Midwest, which was flattened by glaciers during the last ice age, the Driftless Area was left untouched by glaciers, resulting in a landscape of rolling hills, steep bluffs, deep river valleys, scenic beauty, and ecological diversity.

The region is home to several unique ecosystems, including oak savannas, tallgrass prairies, trout streams, and rare and endangered species of plants and animals.

In addition to its natural beauty, the Driftless Area has a rich cultural history, with evidence of human habitation dating back thousands of years. Native American tribes such as the Ho-Chunk and the Kickapoo lived in the area for centuries. European settlers began arriving in the 19th century, establishing farms, towns, and industries such as lead mining.

Today, the Driftless Area is a popular destination for outdoor recreation, including hiking, fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching. The region is home to several state parks, nature reserves, charming small towns, and historic sites.
